Alcock Ashdown is engaged in the design and construction of seagoing grade steel vessels for various purposes as well as inland and coastal class ships and boats in steel and FRP. It has in-house technical expertise and two well equipped manufacturing yards with state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities at Bhavnagar and Chanch in Gujarat state of India.Chanch has the largest dry dock on the northwestern coast of India with direct access to the sea.

The company has become a major centre for ship building, ship conversion and overhauls projects.

This company is a fully owned undertaking of Government of Gujarat, having its first legacy shipyard located at Old Port, Bhavnagar and the second yard, recently developed at the Chanch island of Amreli District of Gujarat. This company was originally owned by a British business house during the pre- independence era and subsequently taken over and re- activated by the Government of India in 1975. Later the ownership of the company was transferred to Government of Gujarat in 1994. The company is incorporated under the Indian Companies Act, 1956.

The is managed by a Board of Directors comprising of high level Gujarat Government officials, professionals and representatives from the defence sector. The Industries Commissioner of Gujarat is the Chairman of the company

  • Fibre glass reinforced plastic boats upto 100 feet length.
  • Small workboats and ships such as tugs, Self propelled barges, Split hopper barges, Deck loading pontoons, Fishing Trawlers, Inland gas and liquid tankers, Pollution control vessels, Research vessels, Fire floats.
  • Medium size cargo and passenger vessels upto 30,000 dwt.
  • Ship repairs at dry dock as well as afloat.

To cater to the emerging opportunities of shipbuilding in India, the company has setup a shipyard at Chanch island in close proximity to the Port Pipavav, which is owned and managed by APM Terminals on the west coast of Gujarat, emerging as an important gateway port for containers, bulk and liquid cargo.

This shipyard is being developed with the following facilities,

  • Graving dry dock 128 m x 25 m
  • 50 t Goliath crane for the dry dock
  • Self floating caisson gate for dry dock
  • 160 m long fabrication bay with 2 nos. 15 t Goliath cranes
  • 175m long outfitting cum shiprepair jetty
  • Panel, Block & Hull assembly area of 30000 m2
  • Side launchways for vessels upto 150 m
  • End shipbuilding berth cum launchways 2 x 120 m
